Modernized Crime

“There is no crime when there is law punishing it” – Criminal Law principle

Bullying and stalking friends and even strangers has been made easier through the cyber world. Is cyberbullying ethical? Should the government enable specific laws to punish perpetrators of such bullying? I believe that cyberbullying is unethical and should be given attention by Philippine law makers as soon as possible because said bullying does not only pressure, stress, and harass victims, it also causes suicide. Cyberbullying and stalking were given much attention in different states after causing a 13 year old girl in Missouri to commit suicide. Cyberbullying is known as an act of harassing, threatening, degrading, and embarrassing an individual or a group through the internet or using any of the digital technology.

It is necessary to give legal basis on cyberbullying and cyberstalking because if there are no specific laws protecting individuals from cyberbullying, the immoral act would continue to ruin anyone’s life through blackmail, and other forms of harassment. Based on researches and studies, those who have been cyber-bullied suffer from psychological disorders like anxiety and depression, lowered self-esteem, failed performaces on schools, and most of the time, isolating theirselves from the public.

It is beneficial to punish and criminalize individuals who bully and stalk in the cyberspace because the act of doing it intrudes person’s privacy and that individual’s right to maintain whatever reputation he or she upholds. There are already laws in the Philippines pertaining to new media but not any of them specifically deals with cyberbullying and cyberstalking.

It is ethical for everybody to fight against people who bully and stalk through the internet because there would be no “bully” if no one lets themselves be bullied. The greatest thing we can contribute to stop the modernized crime is to start within ourselves. Don’t bully, so you wouldn’t be bullied.

Cybercrimes are rampant in the internet. Some uses the new media for human trafficking and child pornography. Others use the internet to harass and embarrass individuals. Cyberbullying and cyberstalking should be everybody’s concern and all of us should be attentive. The state should provide specific legal grounds to penalize and criminalize people who bully and stalk in the cyberspace. Being bullied and stalked is not an easy matter. Who would know if the intention of the stalker is beyond stalking? What if someone is stalking you so he or she can gather information that he/she will use to harm you and your family? As the common saying goes, “Prevention is the greatest cure.” So let us be vigilant in using the internet and entrusting information we are giving out. And most of all, don’t add to the growing population of those people who use the new media to harass and humiliate other people. Let us not send hatred to others because we would not also want to receive blackmails and hate messages.

Media, what’s new!

Have you updated your facebook status today? Or whom did you follow on twitter the other week? Who does not know about Friendster? Facebook? Twitter? YouTube? Yahoo? Google? These social networking sites and other online news websites are so familiar, famous, and trendy nowadays. When it comes to love, they always say, “age doesn’t matter.” On the other hand, when we talk about new media, they say, “we don’t choose according to age.” With new media, we have a new generation, new culture, new habits and practices, a new world and a new us. But do we really know what this trend had made us and how this new media affects us?

As we say, the internet has brought many advantages to everybody’s lives. It is said to help make education easier for everybody. Just through typing and clicking, list appears on the monitor and you can have a bunch of knowledge about anything you wanted to research on. In communication, new media causes time and space compression, for it brings people closer to one another. These are only some of the many benefits of the internet. People enjoy the advantages of the new media but it also brings minuses.

The internet had affected cultures and practices of citizens in negative ways. It had influenced traditional routines of different units. For example, traditional media is now competing with the new media. Newspapers, television, and radio are now contending with online news. Published reports are now posted online. The Philippine Daily Inquirer, now has the inquirer.net. The Philippine Star has the philstar.com and for the Manila Bulletin, mb.com. Also, broadcasted news can now be viewed on YouTube or on broadcasting networks’ official webpages. We can now also watch news live through online streaming. Additionally, different cultures were already affected like change in attitudes and perceptions of people. And worse, new media is now controlling the minds of the people, which is supposedly, people overpowering the technology. Above all, most users are aware of the minuses of new media but people just ignore about them.

A big part of the community is captivated by the internet. Students use this to research on classroom topics. Business groups use the internet to acquire more customers and to advertise their names and products. Politicians use the internet to reach out to citizens, to campaign and ask for support. Newspaper companies, television networks, and radio stations have created online sites to deliver breaking news and other current events.

We have benefitted, are benefitting and will be benefitting from the internet, but we should also know our limitations in using it. We should learn not to be too dependent on the new media.

Student’s number 1 goal in going to college is to graduate. Not just to graduate with degree but most probably graduate ON time.

Why would someone aspire to graduate on time? Students aspire to finish college on time to be able to find a work and start to earn for living. Also, finishing college on the desired time will lessen the burden of parents to their sons and daughters through tuition fees.

I am a student, a student who never aspired for anything but to graduate ON TIME. I’ve did everything just to attain my goal. I trained myself to adapt to an environment which was so strange before, I didn’t sleep for almost 48 hours (for many times) to finish my papers, I go to my classes even if everything seemed floating because of sickness, I tried living alone, far from my family and took care of myself as if I myself is my parents, I sacrificed wants just to photocopy those tons and tons of readings, I attended classes also even summers, except for 2009 wherein I chose to stay in Laguna to take care of my Aunt who is undergoing chemotheraphy, and most especially I did and gave my everything, my all just to accomplish thesis in one semester. I did it all just to graduate on time.

Then list of subjects for my supposed (but still hoping) last semester was released. On my shock one of my needed subjects is not on the choices. Immediately I looked for a paper and started a petition. Everyone is so cooperative; I had more than 30 names who appealed also for that subject. I posted it on the Bulletin Board and the other morning it was gone. Some said the Department Chair already have the petition paper. As far as I remember there were 3 other subjects who were petitioned.

After 1 week I chose to follow up our request for them to open another subject. My world seemed so dim after I heard that there is still no assurance that it will be offered. And someone said “Hindi na namin problema kung hindi ka gagraduate On Time!” My world turned into darkness. That’s the only time I cried so much for academics. My number 1 goal is on threat.

I looked back and asked myself, did I have mistakes in following my course outline? NO! I Think, I did no mistake!

I see something is wrong. Photo Journalism was offered first semester during the A.Y. 2009-2010. And it is also offered this A.Y. 2010-2011, first semester. Then why on earth will it again be offered A.Y. 2010-2011, second semester? Is it because it is the subject where there is someone who can handle and teach? For someone like me who had already taken Online Journalism A.Y. 2009-2010, second semester and Photo Journalism A.Y. 2010-2011, first semester will now have nothing to resort. Should I be the one compensating with their problem?

I thought it was the University of the People? Then why I am now suffering from prior restraints — restraint to graduate on time and to find job on time, restraint to work for my papa and mama, restraint to earn money for my sister’s college.

To my teachers, still I respect you so much even if I was told that “it will not be your problem if I will not be graduating on Time.” You’ve also said “Bahala na sa enrollment.” Bahala na sa enrollment? Do you think I am just playing future telling? I can not tell myself “let’s just see if I will be graduating on time or not on the day of enrollment.” Do you think I can still sleep till the day of enrollment? Why don’t you just answer me YES or NO? If Yes then I’ll be so happy and I can inform my co-journalism major that this subject will be open next semester. If No then I will find another way. I myself will find another way because it seems no one among you have the answers, no one is willing to give me an answer.

You can not blame me. I hope know that. You’re ruining a student’s hope to graduate On time. Will you not react this way if You will be in my shoes right now?

All I am just asking right now is a little consideration. Give me the chance to prove myself that I can graduate on time.

Less usage of plastics may be a good starting solution to lessen the risk of environmental problem, but that was just an idea. Less plastic, less risk isn’t it Mr. President? Then, we plant more trees, and order to imprison illegal loggers, not just the people who corrupted. Then why not start appointing inventors to improve the e-jeepneys to lessen gasoline consumation.

The Philippines is also facing problem on rapid population enlargement that causes increase in number of unemployed people and adds up to education crisis. As of now, I can no longer think what can solve all those, but I, we have faith in you sir. Reproductive Health Bill may be the solution but it may not be as well. I don’t know, my head is turning now.

I just hope that the batch of the next generations will still see how great is to live and how beautiful is the world. I wish that somewhere in the future, there will be no problems like these. And the solution must start now, in your administration.

Many of us, or should I say, all of us are counting on you sir. But also I know you can not do it alone that is why now I’m requesting everyone to cooperate. Our President needs our help to raise our country. Let’s all give our support to him.

Go, Fight, Win, your Excellency President Noynoy Aquino. Make your parents proud, make us all proud of you.

My prayers are with you. May you be guided with Gods grace and break a leg.

If we are your bosses, now you also become my boss. So boss Noynoy, once again congatulations and Mabuhay ka.#

Alagaan? Numbers in jueteng alagaan? Why don’t we just do it to our mother nature? She needs more care rather than that number. Pollution there, pollution here, pollution everywhere. As long as technology advances more, I believe pollution also steps forward. But we can not stop technological advancesments because as what Bernal (from our STS readings) said, it benefits us more than the risk it gives. She also said in her article “In Praise of Science and Technology,” it is for the people to think, manage and control it.

Mr. President don’t you think your cigarette adds up to the pollution? Do you want to live in a 40 degrees celsius as the minimum temperature in the near future? I hate heat, I hate global warming, I hate climate change. You said you’ll try to be a good model to everyone in anyway, but in that matter, you’re not. Because of your statement before that you can’t quit smoking now, I know it will be harder for me, to convince my father to quit that bad habit too. Why? Because the Philippines’ President is also smoking. I know you want to, but you just can’t. That’s what my father also feels. But in that sense, if not for yourself no one can help you. Aside from that, I also wanted to remind you again Mr. President (reminder?) that Smoking kills (I also don’t want my dad die early). I know you’re aware of that. I just wanted to say it again to you sir. Please take care of your health (for you to be able to perform all your platforms and to be able to send corrupt officials to jail) and your officials’ health. Again a reminder, when someone smokes, he or she is not the only one suffering.

I wish someday soon, Philippne Daily Inquirer’s headline: “P-Noy decided to not smoke”. Maybe I will be the happiest person in the country if that happens.

Dear P-NOY,

Good day Mr. President.

First of all I want to congratulate you for being the 15th president of the Philippines and for your future accomplishments.

Point

Honestly Mr. President, I did not vote for you last May 10 elections because I believed that someone among your competitors was better and has the ability and more experience to run the government. But that doesn’t mean I already hate you nor I’m opposing your government, perhaps you have a lot of time to prove to everyone who did not vote for you including me, that we were wrong. Yes I can accept my fault, even right away. Just prove it to me Mr. President.

By the way sir, your inaugural speech was great. I just can’t forget your statement “No Reconciliation, without justice.” I pray that you can really give justice to those who corrupted the nation’s money, whom you consider as the main reason that burdens the entire Filipino community.

In relation to that, I’ll be your number one fan if you will be able to stop jueteng operations in our place, Ilocos Sur, and in the entire country. I hate jueteng, personally because half of my dad’s savings from working as a seaman for how many months, every year,  all goes to that illegal game (if it was really a game). I know that ignoring jueteng is the main thing to solve my (you too soon sir) problem but guess what sir, nobody wanted to ignore it. Every morning some conversations in Ilocos goes like this,

Tapos sa 2 tao ko tatayahan (is that kobrador? I don’t know) para doble kita.

Person 1: Sige Sali na din ako para madamay naman ako sa swerte mo.

Then how many hours passed,

Person 2: Pare iba ang labas. Wala tayong panalo.

Person 1: Di bale mamayang hapon yun na ang labas. Tayahan ulit natin para hindi tayo manghinayang   pag lumabas ito.

Person 2: sige pare. Tayahan natin hanggang hindi lumabas. Alagaan natin.

What do dreams have to do with luck? One should find there own luck to be able to have one and can not be found on dreams through jueteng. Can you imagine for example dear President, Kris Aquino is wasting all her money to find luck in her dreams through jueteng? Of course you can’t imagine that way because for sure kris will never do that, but just think of it and you’ll feel sorry for those who patronize that JUETENG. For how many years, our local officials weren’t able to stop the operations (it’s for them to answer it not me, why) and now I give it all to you sir.

Kris campaigning Noynoy during PGT

After the first day of campaign period last February 9, PPCRV proposed celebrity endorsers should take a leave. But lately, Commission on Elections (Comelec) cleared that these media personnels shouldn’t be panicking because it is not that easy to sue them.

Does this mean that these endorsers are already allowed to use their time and space at work to campaign for their bets? Of course not! Supposedly NO!

I expected this to happen but still I can’t believe it. My friend who watched the audition of the Pilipinas Got Talent in

Baller given by Kris Aquino during Pilipinas Got Talent

University of Baguio Gym last Feb. 17 came home with a yellow baller with prints “Pinoy para kay Noynoy”.

Kris Aquino is one of the three judges of the coming ABS-CBN show, Pilipinas Got Talent. Just asking, did Kris came here in Baguio to judge or to get Baguio residents’ votes for her brother?

This friend of mine told me that while Ms. Aquino gives comments to contestants, she always finds a way for her segues like “Mayor di ba love mo si Noy?”,Baguio di ba love niyo ako? e di love niyo din si Noy kaya aalalahanin niyo siya sa May?

Excuse me but is it not an obvious way of campaigning for her brother? You may say there’s nothing wrong with it but for me there is. She went here for the purpose of work but then i think she brought with her, her personal intentions. I can see she was prepared. “There were a lot of ballers given to people” a friend disclosed.

Seems like I should have supported PPCRV’s petition earlier, To sue artists who will use their shows to campaign for someone.

Come on! Even if that will be not be aired (I’m sure ABS will not show that on TV), Kris Aquino still is talking to audiences who went in UB gym for entertainment and not to hear a meeting de avance.

Disclaimer; I have nothing against Noynoy as a person and I did not post this to campaign for other presidentiables.

This is about where and when should any endorser campaign for their bet politicians. #Dhonalyn Agorilla
